Internationalization

TUM-GS provides an overview on different support schemes for your research stay abroad. Kindly read this pages first and carefully.  In the following, you get additional information on the specific application process at FGZ-EI.

Internationalization Support at FGZ-EI

TUM Graduate School recommends and supports an international research activities e.g. in form of a TUM-GS internationalization support voucher. Hereby, TUM Graduate School supports your research phase with up to 1,600 € (possibly up to 3,000 € for Doctoral candidates who join TUM Graduate School from 01.01.2014 on). Your application always includes FGZ-EI in the process of approval:

Application Guideline for Internationalisation Support

All FGZ-EI Members:

  • The TUM-GS website explains who is eligible to apply. Main criterion hereby is your source of funding (e.g. contract with TUM, scholarship, or contract with third party). In case of mixed financing or already terminated contracts, we recommend to approach FGZ-EI (fgz-ei(at)ei.tum.de) though.
  • Another requirement is a successfull interim assessment (also called "mid-term evaluation"). With respect to funding, the best phase for your internationalisation is during the second half of your doctoral project.  You can find the forms for the interim assessment on FGZ-EI  download website.
  • Apply early, at least 4 weeks in advance to your trip.
  • Furthermore, the application process itself varies, depending on your contract /source of funding and on  the kind of your FGZ-EI membership  (mandatoy members, (date of joining after 1.1.2014) and voluntary members (before).

Doctoral Candidates employed at TUM or Klinikum R.d.I:

  • Mandatory FGZ-EI members apply using the online system Doc-GS, voluntary members use the FGZ-EI application form on our download website.
  • Print and sign the form and send it to FGZ-EI for approval, preferably by email (fgz-ei(at)ei.tum.de).
  • A reimbursement of early costs (e.g. flight, accomodation, conference fee) prior to your trip requires sending the following documents to TUM-GS, c/o Mr. Heuser, Garching: i) approved FGZ-EI internationalization form sheet; ii) approved TUM business trip authorization form; iii) receipt/invoices/bank statement as proof of your costs; iv) optional: directive for down payments issued by TUM EI travel cost centre ("Anordnung von Abschlagszahlungen durch die Reisekostenstelle").
  • After your trip, you apply for reimbursement at TUM EI travel cost centre. Typically, the staff at your institute is supporting you in this process.
  • Once you received back the processed docuements from TUM EI travel cost centre, you  forward this set of documents to TUM-GS, c/o Mr. Heuser, Garching. Don't forget to add the approved FGZ-EI internationalization form sheet.

Doctoral Candidates with government-based / public Scholarship

  • Mandatory FGZ-EI members apply using the online system Doc-GS, voluntary members use the FGZ-EI application form on our download website.
  • Confirmation provided by scholarship provider on missing or already exhausted internationalisation support within the specific scholarship program. In case of scholarship-based mobility support, this budget has to be used first. Hence, the TUM-GS internationalization support can be used in a co-funding scheme.
    The confirmation by scholarship provider  is not required for Doctoral Candiates supported by China Scholarship Council (CSC) scholarships.
  • Print and sign the form and send it to FGZ-EI for approval, preferably by email (fgz-ei(at)ei.tum.de add the confirmation by your scholarship provider, if required.
  • A reimbursement of early costs (e.g. flight, accomodation, conference fee) prior to your trip requires sending the following documents to TUM-GS, c/o Mr. Heuser, Garching: i) approved FGZ-EI internationalization form sheet; ii) receipt/invoices/bank statement as proof of your costs; iii)
    the FGZ-EI reimbursement form for scholarship holders, available on our download website
  • After your trip, you fill the reimbursement form for scholarship holders, provided on our  our download website .
  • Kindly send i) the approved FGZ-EI internationalization form sheet; ii) the reimbursement form for scholarship holders; and iii) final receipts/invoices/bank statements as proof of your costs directly to TUM-GS, c/o Mr. Heuser, Garching

Remarks and FAQ:

  • Co-funding is possible,  e.g. when your (remaining) FGZ-EI internationalization budget does not cover all costs of your trip. Please put a not on your documents with the adress your documents should be returned after processing by TUM-GS.
  • The extended budget (+ 1.400€)  is only for research stays lasting 4 weeks or longer (FGZ-EI mandatory members only)
  • It is also possible to invite researchers using the TUM-GS internationalization support, especially for your oral defense.
  • Eligible for funding are TUM/MRI employees, candidates funded by governmental and non-profit scholarships with or without permanent office at TUM.
  • Not eligible for funding are candidates funded by company-based scholarships, candidates employed at companies as well as employees at TUM-affiliated institutes ("An-Institute der TUM"), other research institutions/universities/universities of applied sciences, as well as candidates funding their work privately financed.

TUM-GS Internationalization Grant

This Grant is a compettitive application format for excellent students who are not eligible for the TUM-GS Internationalization Support Scheme above. The concept was developed by TUM-GS and has already started on some Faculty Graduate Centers early 2017. Hence, FGZ-EI has not put into force the TUM-GS Internationalization Grant so far.
