Technical Acoustics and Noise Control

Lecturer: Prof. Dr.-Ing. Bernhard U. Seeber
Assistant: Dipl.-Ing. Matthieu Kuntz
Semester: Winter Semester
Target group: Wahlmodul zur fachlichen Vertiefung (Master EI)
Wahlpflichtfach Technologie und Managementorientierte BWL
Breadth: 2/2/0 (Lecture/Exercise Course/Practical Course)
Exam: oral, 30 min.
Candidates for repeat exams in the summer semester are asked to contact us well in advance to arrange an individual time for the oral exam.
Time & Location:

Not in WS2020/21, will be held again in WS2021/22

Lecture: Wednesday, 11:30 - 13:00, N3815 N3815
Exercise Course: Tuesday, 15:45 - 17:15, N3815

Start: Lecture: 16.10.2019, Exercise Course: 22.10.2019

  1. Introduction:
Acoustic and noise control, principles of noise reduction, sound fields, sound level calculation.
  2. Origin and propagation of sound:
Simple oscillators, resonators, types of sound waves.
Point sources, geometrical acoustics, absorption, room acoustics: room modes, statistical room acoustics, reverberation time, simulation methods, psychoacoustics of rooms.
Airborne sound insulation, body-borne sound insulation.
  3. Sound measuring techniques and sound impacts:
Measurement microphones, weighted sound level (LA, LB, LC), time constants (I, F, S), equivalent sound pressure level  Leq, sound analysis with absolute and relative constant bandwidth, sound of rotating machinery, third-octave band analysis, insertion loss.
Calculation procedures: loudness level, loudness, psychoacoustic annoyance, Speech Interference level (SIL), Temporary and Permanent Threshold Shifts (TTS & PTS).
  4. Noise control according to (European) law, codes and norms:
Noise at workplaces, noise from machines, industrial noise (“TA Lärm”), noise from road traffic, railroads and aircrafts.
  5. Practical introduction to acoustic measurements:

    Practical introduction to acoustic measurements:
Applicable norms, use of measurement equipment, conduction of measurements in the anechoic chamber, analysis of measurements, creation of measurement reports.

The oral exam reflects the practical character of the lecture, which imparts a fundamental understanding of acoustics and noise abatement. During the 30-min oeal exam, students will be asked to demonstrate a fundamental understanding and the ability to individually solve practically-relevant problems in technical acoustics.
Every student is individually responsible for proper exam sign-up at TUMOnline.
