Today, methods and systems of electrical engineering and information technology are used almost everywhere spanning from automotive construction to medicine or from telecommunications to satellite navigation (GPS). The TUM Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering addresses this widely spread research area by focusing its research activities in centers of competence (CoCs), where research groups cooperate together on extended research topics. At present, the following CoCs have been established:

- CoC Electronics for Life-Sciences
- CoC Communication
- CoC Design of Electronic Circuits and Systems
- CoC Embedded and Cyber-physical Systems
- CoC Electromagnetic Sensors and Measurement Systems
- CoC Neuro-Engineering
- CoC Power Systems of the Future
- CoC Robotics, Autonomy and Interaction
Besides of the aforementioned research focuses, interdisciplinary research plays a major role for the department. This comprises tight cooperation with other departments and disciplines within and outside TU München. Close research cooperation, in particular, exists with the departments for computer science, mechanical engineering, mathematics, physics, medicine, biology and economics. International cooperation and integration play a major role as well. Renowned universities worldwide are among our research partners as well as research institutes (e. g. Max-Planck, DLR and FhG) and industry (e. g. Siemens, Rohde & Schwarz).
Our research is predominantly financed by external funding, particularly by German Science foundation (DFG), European Union, national ministries and industry.
