Information Theory of Nonlinear Fiber Optic

Fiber optic cables form the backbone of our global communication networks, no other medium allows a faster data exchange. A useful description of waveform propagation in optical fiber is given by the non-linear Schrödinger equation (NLSE). However, its form does not admit easy insight of information theoretically relevant quantities such as capacity. Recently, some simplified models of the optical non-linearity have been proposed which allow information-theoretic analysis. We are investigating these models with the aim to improve the existing lower and upper bounds on the capacity of the optical channel.
