Description of achievement and assessment methods

The type of examination is adapted to the different learning outcomes:

Knowledge-based learning results are examined during a written exam with 90 minutes duration.

Individual problem solving and programming capabilities are examined via programming assignments during the semester.

In addition, students have to read 1-4 scientific papers per chapter of the lecture during the semester.

The final grade is composed of the following elements:

  • 70% final exam
  • 30% programming assignments (3 graded programming assignments)

Contents

The lecture discusses basics and applications of multimedia networking and communication. The main focus of the lecture is on characterizing the requirements multimedia applications have and the support that networks can provide to meet these requirements: Network and Application Quality-of-Service, Example: Streaming Media over VBR Channels, Example: Voice over IP (VoIP), IP QoS Parameter, Measuring QoS, Packet Dispersion Techniques, Multimedia Data Transport, TCP/IP, UDP, RTP, RTSP, Packet Loss Detection, QoS Architectures, Traffic Specification, Resource Allocation, Scheduling, Subjective and Objective Quality Assessment, Content Delivery Networks, Peer-to-Peer Media Delivery.

Study goals

At the end of the module students are able to understand the basics concepts of multimedia communications. They will be able to judge if specific applications can be deployed on specific networks. The students also gain a deep understanding of how to close the gap between application requirements and network support.

Teaching and learning methods

  • Learning method: In addition to the individual methods of the students consolidated knowledge is aspired by repeated lessons in exercises and tutorials.
  • Teaching method: During the lectures students are instructed in a teacher-centered style. The exercises are held in a student-centered way.

The students are expected to read 1-4 scientific articles for every chapter of the lecture to train and improve their scientific reading skills.
