The Master of Science in Communications Engineering – MSCE program at the TUM provides you with a solid background in the theory and the fundamental concepts of Communications Engineering. It gives you insights into current trends and developments and ample opportunities for practical experience.
was established in 1998. It is considered one of the most successful of its kind in Germany. Upon completion of the MSCE program, students are awarded the M.Sc. in Communications Engineering degree, opening the possibility for further work towards a PhD or a Dr.-Ing. degree.
The MSCE program takes 2 years (4 semesters), including a 9 week internship and 6 months for the completion of the Master Thesis. It offers two specializations: Communications Systems – CS and Communications Electronics – CE. Depending on the choice of specialization, the curricula for the 2nd and 3rd semester differ. The Communications Systems branch concentrates more on the system aspects of communications technology. The Communications Electronics branch is focused on IC Design and the aspects of hardware implementation.
The first semester
The first semester starting in October is common to both branches with core modules in Communications Systems (e.g. Channel Coding, Information Theory etc.) and core modules in communications electronics (e.g. Electronic Design Automation, System-on-Chip Technologies etc.)
The second and third semester
The second and third semester is composed of a mixture of elective courses depending on the chosen specialization.
The Communications Systems branch offers courses on Channel Coding, Mobile Communications, Optical Communications, Cryptography and System Security, Realtime Systems, Image and Video Compression, Multimedia Communications, Pattern Recognition, Radio Navigation and Location, Simulation of Communication Networks, Resource Management in Wireless Networks and Space-Time Processing in MIMO Systems.
The Communications Electronics branch offers courses on Electronic Design Automation, Analog/Mixed Signal IC Design, IC Manufacturing, Testing of Digital ICs, Hardware/Software Co-Design, Nanoelectronics, Nanotechnology, Physical Electronics, Devices Simulation, Advanced MOSFET and Novel Devices.
The courses of both branches are accompanied by a broad range of complementary Labs and Seminars.
An internship of 9 weeks duration in a German company or at a chair is intended for the semester break between the 2nd and the 3rd semester.
The fourth semester
The program is concluded with a Master Thesis during the fourth semester and a follow-up graduation ceremony.
The courses are held in small groups of no more than 40 students with supplementary labs and tutorials. Each student is provided office space and a PC with internet access. For labs and semester projects, students are assisted individually by staff members. The Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering (EI) has 3000 students, 46 professorships and 400 research assistants. The majority of the courses are taught by the department’s full professors, many of whom are IEEE fellows. In the summer semester, renowned international professors come to Munich to give guest lectures on advanced topics from the field of Communications Engineering within the MSCE Program, e.g. Prof. J. Additionally practically oriented advanced topics courses are being offered each winter semester by lecturers from the industry.
As of winter semester 2013/2014, students are required to pay only the student union and basic semester ticket fees in the amount of 142,40 Euro per semester. Detailed information can be found here. However, in general there is a possibility of a paid internship or student job in the industry. Teaching and research grants are available during the second year. Further grants covering living expenses are available from the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) and other organizations.
A recognized BSc or BEE degree is a prerequisite for admission. All teaching is conducted in English, knowledge of German language is not necessary. Non-native speakers of English are required to submit adequate proof of English proficiency. A modest knowledge of German may be helpful for daily life.
