Description of achievement and assessment methods

In the written (closed book) exam the student can prove his ability to present his knowledge in the fundamentalconcepts of electricity production from hydro power and energy storage within a limited time frame.

Contents

1) Renewable Energy Potentials:Overview, definitions

2) Hydro Power:- hydro power potentials- types of hydro power stations- hydro turbines: turbine types, application ranges- energy conversion in hydro turbines - physical fundamentals- hydro power without dams and weirs - stream turbines: fundamentals, turbine types, application range- planning of hydro power stations: hydrological surveys, layout, power plan

3) Energy Storage:- why do we need energy storage - grid stability, safety of supply, economic reasons etc.- which possibilities do exist, pros and cons, potential, development state etc.- pumped storage plants: fundamentals, efficiency, electromechaical equipmen- new approaches (Power Tower, ring wall storage, disused mining systems etc.)

Study goals

After successful participation in the module, students will be able:- To understand the established and new technologies of hydropower generation and energy storage- to evaluate the properties of those technologies- to understand the principles of planning of hydropower plants- make evaluation of hydropower plants and projects

Teaching and learning methods

The theoretical content of the lectures are presented by the lecturer and supported by PowerPoint slides and thetraditional black board method. Accompanying exercises and discussions on relevant examples allow students toparticipate and to strengthen the interdependencies.
